Class Descriptions & Dress Requirements
We encourage students to dress in accordance with their gender identity and gender expression.
Contemporary
Contemporary dance technique promotes dynamic physicality utilizing organic movement pathways, freedom of movement, and artistic expression. This class promotes healthy alignment, breath and flow, creativity, strength, coordination, and flexibility.
All:
Clothing: Black form fitted top or leotard, black leggings or dance pants (plus dance belt / athletic support for men)
Footwear: Bare feet
Ballet
Ballet provides a strong technical foundation for many dance disciplines. The focus is on alignment and placement of the body while encouraging artistry in movement. Classes strengthen the body and promote grace, balance, coordination, strength flexibility.
Women:
Clothing: Black leotard, flesh-tone or pink footed tights*, optional black wrap ballet skirt
Footwear: Matching canvas flesh-tone or pink ballet slippers with elastics
*note that black tights would also be acceptable but flesh-tone or pink tights may need to be purchased for the performance
Men:
Clothing: Black form fitted t-shirt, black shorts or black pants, dance belt / athletic support
Footwear: Canvas white or black ballet slippers with elastics
Jazz
Jazz is a dynamic dance form accompanied by upbeat and popular music. Classes include warm-up, technique, jazz vocabulary, along with energetic dance combinations. Jazz technique promotes rhythm, precision, strength and flexibility, and is enhanced with stylistic flair.
Women:
Clothing: Black form fitted top or leotard, flesh-tone tights or black tights, leggings, shorts, or dance pants
Footwear: Skin-tone slip on jazz shoes
Men:
Clothing: Black form fitted t-shirt, black shorts or black pants, dance belt / athletic support
Footwear: Skin-tone slip on jazz shoes
Contemporary Jazz
Contemporary Jazz is a dynamic fusion of Contemporary and Jazz dance forms. With a strong technical base including jazz and contemporary vocabulary, this class promotes breath, flow, style, strength, coordination, and flexibility.
All:
Clothing: Black form fitted top or leotard, black leggings or dance pants (plus dance belt / athletic support for men)
Footwear: Bare feet
NAfro Technique
This class is an exciting fusion of contemporary and African dance forms rooted in NAfro Technique. This technique was created by Casimiro Nhussi, Artistic Director of NAfro Dance Productions and former Principal and Artistic Director of the Mozambique National Song and Dance Company. This upbeat class is taught by one of NAfro’s own dancers.
All:
Clothing: Black form fitted top or leotard, black leggings or dance pants (plus dance belt / athletic support for men)
Footwear: Bare feet
Tap
Tap dance is a percussive art form which utilizes intricate rhythms and footwork and can be danced to a variety of musical styles. Tap emphasizes rhythm, musicality, coordination, and style.
All:
Clothing: Black form fitted top or leotard, black leggings or dance pants (plus dance belt / athletic support for men)
Footwear: Black tap shoes
Hip Hop
Hip Hop dance is closely related to Hip Hop music and culture and incorporates various stylistic influences. These energetic classes include center warm-up, a dynamic array of movements and steps, freestyle, and energetic dance combinations.
All:
Clothing: Any clothing you can move in including activewear, t-shirts, sweats (no jeans)
Footwear: White indoor sneakers with white, non-marking soles
