Entrance Requirements

Admission to the Program is by audition. Applicants should have completed an intermediate level of training in classical ballet, and/or contemporary dance, and show professional potential for a career in contemporary dance. An accepted applicant must hold a high school diploma, or qualify as a mature student, or as an accelerated student with

the University of Winnipeg

Upon entry, students are placed according to their level in technique and performance.

Most students are placed in Level 1. However, sufficiently advanced students may enter the Program in Level 2.

​​Steps to take:​

​

1. Send Audition Application (and video Audition if not attending in person) by January 31, 2025

2. Attend The Senior Professional Program in person auditions February 20 and 21, 2025 or submit a

     video audition by January 31, 2025

3. Receive response regarding your application

4. If accepted, will receive official acceptance Letter from The School of Contemporary Dancers

5. Confirm acceptance to The Senior Professional Program

6. Submit deposit to reserve your placement in The Program

7. If considering the Degree Program, please contact:

8. If enrolling in the Degree Program, apply for admission to The University of Winnipeg.

9. If enrolling in the Degree Program and require accommodation in The University of Winnipeg residence, apply            immediately after admission into The University of Winnipeg

10. If you are an out of province student and not enrolling in the Degree Program, contact regarding accommodation options

11. If applying for the Degree Program, enroll in your choice of academic courses after acceptance to

     The University of Winnipeg

12. Receive  welcome package and Current Student Page login from The School of Contemporary Dancers

13. Log into the SPP Current Student page to keep up to date on information about The Senior Professional Program!

Audition Information

Applicants may audition in-person or by video application. Students applying by video or to attend the in-person audition should submit their applications by January 31, 2025 to be considered within the first audition round.  Applications may also be submitted after this date if there are placements still available.

1. In-person audition: February 20nd and 21st, 2025.

​

We highly recommend that applicants attend the two-day audition in February. Students participate in two morning audition classes each day and will be scheduled for interviews in the afternoon. This provides the opportunity for the applicants to familiarize themselves with the Program. Out-of-province students may also do a two-day audition at an alternative date through special arrangements. To arrange to audition in person, or to make inquiries about the Program, please contact Natalie Sluis, School Administrator, by email or phone. After the initial contact, please submit a completed application form along with support material to the link below.

2. Video audition


Alternatively, students may apply by video. To audition by video, please contact us by phone or email. After the initial contact, the applicant should submit a completed application form with their audition video according to the application form directions in the link below.

Video Audition requirements: To be submitted simultaneous with application form

To apply via Video Audition please submit your videos to info@schoolofcontemporarydancers.ca immediately after application submission.

 

The settings that should be included in the video audition are listed below. Combinations may be short and may be shown on one side. Please submit a link for Vimeo, Youtube, or send by Wetransfer.

 

Please include the following information in your email:

Name, Phone Number, City/Country of Residence, and confirm that you have submitted this application.

The following ballet settings should be included in your video audition:

 

a) Ballet Barre

 

b) Ballet Centre- pliés and port de bras- tendus, glissés or dégagés- ronds de jambes- frappés or petit battement- adage- grande battement- adage enchainement- petit allegro enchainement- allegro enchainement- grand allegro enchainement

The following contemporary settings should be included in your video audition:

​

a) Contemporary Warm-Up- pliés with use of spirals, curves or contractions- tendus, glissés or dégagés with use of spirals, curves or contractions- ronds de jambes- contemporary adage- the warm-up may be demonstrated at the barre or in the centre

 

b) Contemporary Centre- contemporary adage- jumping combinations in the centre- 2 combinations across the floor Please note: Two traveling jumping combinations MUST be included.

Tuition & Fees

After being accepted to The Senior Professional Program, Canadian students must submit a non-refundable deposit of $1000 to reserve their placement in The Program. International students must submit a non-refundable deposit of $2000 CND.

Tuition is based on enrollment Level (Level 1,2,3,4), and Citizenship Status (Canadian/International). International applicants are welcome and are only required to pay an additional $1,000 tuition fee per year above the rate for Canadian students.

Scholarships and Bursaries:

​

Manitoba students are eligible to apply for grant awards from the Manitoba Arts Council. The School is also approved by the Manitoba Minister of Advanced Education and Literacy whereby students are eligible for the Canada Student Loans Program and the Manitoba Student Aid Program. Out-of-province students have been successful in attaining similar assistance from their province of origin.

The School of Contemporary Dancers offers three categories of scholarships. Some applicants are eligible for partial scholarships through the Jill Mino Memorial Entrance Scholarships. Partial scholarship awards are available to all fourth-year students through the Bruce Mitchell Memorial Scholarships. The Graduation Scholarships are also available to all fourth-year students to assist with promoting the transition from student to emerging artist level.

The Jill Mino Memorial Scholarship Awards

​

In August 2004, The School of Contemporary Dancers established the Jill Mino Memorial Entrance Scholarship.

​

Ms. Mino was a member of the School’s faculty for over twenty years and a teacher of dance for Westwood Collegiate. As a teacher with the Junior Professional Program of The School of Contemporary Dancers and also at the Collegiate, Jill helped many young dancers prepare for entrance to the Senior Professional Program of The School of Contemporary Dancers and to eventually enter professional dance careers.

The Bruce Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Awards

​

Bruce Mitchell graduated from the Professional Program of The School of Contemporary Dancers in 1987. Bruce was a gifted artist who performed as a company member with Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers and Dancemakers.

​

The Bruce Mitchell Memorial Scholarship was established to provide tuition awards for Level 4 students and all Level 4 students are eligible for this award.

​

The Graduation Scholarship Awards

​

This scholarship is awarded to students during their final year in the Senior Professional Program to assist with the transition from student to young professional artist. These awards assist the graduating students to participate in special activities and professional projects promoting this transition.
